Cyprus won 39-3.

Thanks to Nikos Hadjipetrou we have fresh update for the long awaited game. He had the pleasure to watch the game, even though he is currently a newbie in rugby world. Cyprus won 39-3. Nearly half of the “Cypriot” players were in fact British ex-pats living in Cyprus, and the rest were repatriated Cypriots from countries with a long tradition in Rugby (UK, South Africa, Australia, etc.) Some of the Greek players felt they came in Cyprus for a holiday trip in a friendly country, only to realize, a bit too late, that they were actually being confronted by an opponent team that seemed to feel they were playing a world cup final.

The game was played in Kiniras Sports Center , Geroskipou,Paphos and started at 14:30. We hope to get soon the complete list of players.

The game was preceded by a U17 game, Limassol Crusaders U17 vs Paphos Tigers U17, two of the mains teams in Cyprus with Nicosia Barbarians.

As soon we know more we will keep you update. Thanks a lot Niko.

Hi Nico, just to correct you on your comment made about the cypriot team only three players qualified on residency and the remainder of the squad are cypriot. It was a good day for rugby in Cyprus and we look forward to playing you again in the true rugby spirit.

Thanks Chyprus for a great game. Superb experience! I wish you luck in the future. Many thanks to the chypriot Federation for their hospitality and organisation.
Looking forward to our next game.

As we all know there are laws that govern who may and may not play for a national team. I am sure that Cyprus has read the law and was in full compliance. Greece on the other hand has National laws and a development policy that is diferent from that of Cyprus, this fact does in no way give anyone the right to criticize Cyprus for the coposition of it’s team.
I had the pleasure of being part of a FIRST EVER and will not let anyone ruin the memory of a very good game, an extremely well planed event and wonderfull hospitality by the Cypriot Union.
Just to get things on the record as far as the game is concerned, It was a very hard and clean game, Cyprus was better prepared than we where and they earned this win. We look forward to building upon the foundation we layed this past weekend and many years of good rugby between our two sister nations.
By the way can anyone tell me if this is the first time a single national anthem was played for both teams in an international rugby match?

Mike is right, we can not all the time complain about rules and regulations. The only way is enforce the championship, train more and more players to end up with a strong national team!
I still do not have the list of all players :( Was this game videotaped?

Yes it was. 5min videos from the game will be broadcasted by most of the greek private channels (Mega,ANT1). I don’t know yet about the full match… I ll keep you informed

    Dear Mike,

Thank you for your kind comments. The C.R.F. has worked very hard over the past 2 years to get ourselves organized and ready to play our first international game. We thank the H.R.F. for accepting our invitation to be the first international side to play us.

Regarding your comment about one national anthem being played for 2 countries, well I must tell you that up until about 15 or so years ago, God Save the Queen was played at all Scotland v England games.

Good luck to you in your forthcoming qualifying match.

Great experience to able to play against players of such high caliber. We learned a lot from the cypriot team whcih will help us in our game that we need to win, against Slovakia. I want to wish the Cyprus Rugby Federation good luck for all its future games and thank them for their great generosity and hospitality.

Well said Mike (Skipper of Greece)I hope this was the first of many games at international and club level, which can only raise the level of skills and interes in the game.

Perhaps it is time the government is challenged over their policy on ex-pats playing for the National team – there is hardly a country in the world that hasn’t benefited from the influx f players from overseas – even the mghty All-Blacks recruit from the pacific islands. The IRB laws are quite clear -use them to develop the game.

Well done to both teams and those who made it happen.
