Gaule prevailed! Fun, fight & Banquet

For the second year running, the “XV de Gaule” Rugby Tournament, organised by the Attica Springboks Rugby Club, took place on Saturday 24 May 2008, at the Glyka Nera Municipal Stadium, aiming to promote and advertise the sport of rugby in Greece and to support the club.

The event took place with the participation of youngsters from the club’s Academy, and 60 or so passionate rugby players, watched by approximately 220 spectators. Honoured guests were the Ambassador of France and the French Consul, together with a representative of the Hellenic Rugby Federation, as well as managers from international French companies. The Greek Minister of Tourism & Development was also kind enough to send a message acknowledging the event.

The tournament itself began with a “tag-rugby” game amongst twenty kids of 9 to 14 years of age from the club’s Academy, followed by a fathers v sons “tag-rugby” game. The highlight of the day was of course the game between one team composed of French nationals resident in Greece named “le XV de Gaule” (each player being named and based on characters from Asterix the Gaulois), and a ‘Barbarian’ team made up of veterans, over 35, and young players under 25 years of age, of Greek and other nationalities. Within both these teams, players from different rugby clubs of the Hellenic Rugby Championship were represented.

Despite a hot day, the game was very fairly played and flowed freely. The sides were well balanced and Rugby afficianados impressed by the considerable improvement in the quality of play from previous years. The result was a 20-14 victory for the “XV de Gaule” team (tries: Gounari (2), Foll (1), Agostini (1) – for the Barbarians: tries: Kosmas (1), Kolyvas (1); conversions: Henderson (2)). The French Ambassador was kind enough to make the awards and presented the cup to the ‘XV de Gaule’ captain.

A substantial Barbecue was served to spectators and players in the post game celebrations which, together with a wide range of beverages, continued well into the evening in extremely good spirit.

This year, the tournament was honoured with the presence of 20 children of the Association “To Hamogelo tou Paidiou”, who had the opportunity to take their first rugby lesson and to show their skills during a game with the Academy kids. It was wonderful to see the great smiles and enjoyment on the faces of these kids as they participated in the fun, and the Club hopes they will be encouraged to join in again.

This was very much a family day out, and a great testament to the way in which rugby brings together persons of all nationalities and ages not only to watch and enjoy the spectacle, but to cross barriers encouraging individuals from different sectors of international society, to meet and socialise in a relaxed and carnival atmosphere.

The club wishes to thank the Sponsors of the tournament for their considerable help in the success of the tournament, as follows: Accor, Danone, Vinci, Attica Zoological Park, AFIC, Spilio & Associés, Elysée, Galitel, Sopexa, Makro, Profil Voyages, Valio, Emmi, TV5 Monde, Coca-Cola, Hagipanagou S.A., Central Marine, and other contributors.
Communication sponsors were: rugby.gr, sportingreece.com, lepetitjournal.com.
